    Brief description of the programme/project/initiative :

    We have introduced the use of tablets like iPad in the school to enhance the learning experience of the students. iPad’s serve the purpose of both a laptop and note book in the class and substantially reduces the bag-load of the students. Highly interactive and graphic-intensive apps available for most subjects enrich students’ learning. It also helps in engaging all kinds of learners in a class. Powerful built-in apps and apps from the App Store let students engage with content in interactive ways, find information in an instant, and access an entire library wherever they go. Students are very tech-savvy today and very comfortable with touch screen technology.

    Why was the project started?
    This project is to make learning more engaging for the students, enable students to learn at their pace, to allow for differentiated learning in the class, to integrate latest technology into education, to help students manage their class work, home work, research and organize all of it in one device, allows for effective collaboration during class work using apps like group board, enables teacher to give instantaneous personalised feed back to each student and to to help student replay a teacher’s lesson for revision before exams.

    Objective:
    The device allows for multisensory access to content, facilitate comprehension, encourage more effective participation in academics, promote creativity, collaboration and critical thinking in students, introduce paperless classrooms through use of apps for note- making, mind maps, pdf readers, audio books and allow for personalized learning.

    List 5 key challenges faced while implementing the programme/project/initiative and how they were overcome?

    “1. The biggest challenge for teachers today is to spark interest in the student, keep them engaged and help them retain the content. Since the student understood better and classroom explanation was cleared in a shorter span of time, the teacher had to ask additional higher order thinking questions and keep worksheets ready that were at par with the iPad.
    2. Teachers needed to change their teaching style. They had to spend a lot of time on research to find apps that would support their pedagogy. Sharing of research and conducting evaluation meetings helped the team to arrive at a consensus on the common apps that can be used for note making, min mapping, collaboration etc. It was difficult to finds subject- specific apps for certain subjects like Economics and Business Studies. This was overcome by the teachers making use of apps that allowed access to content from a variety of newspapers and magazines.
    3. Changing the networking and internet accessibility in all class rooms was a challenge. Initially investing in iPad seemed to be hovering above but once the purpose was explained to the governing body, they believed that iPad would take the curriculum to a new height and supported the project immensely. This has been overcome by upgrading the wifi availability in every classroom.
    4. Explaining to the parents the benefits of iPads in the classroom was essential to the success of the program. This was done by inviting parents to workshops that included mock classroom sessions using iPad. The cost of the device and associated issues of theft, lost and breakages were a concern. These are being overcome by negotiating for a bulk purchase price with the vendor and restricting the introduction of iPad only to secondary classes. Also, the use of interactive white boards will not be stopped so that students not having iPads will not be a t a loss.
    5. Learners can switch over to non-educational apps during a classroom session. This has been overcome by integrating classroom management software that allows a teacher to monitor every student’s iPad. Getting teachers to accept use of technology was a big challenge. We overcame this by training teachers to become techno savvy, got them to believe that lessons would be more interesting for students and once we crossed the bridge, plans were modified to suit classroom teaching using iPad.”

    “1. Teachers can prepare novel content and schools use a variety of media content. Students are able to use the content prepared by teachers for betterment of their learning entirely new levels.
    2. Classrooms can make use of powerful built-in apps and apps from the App Store to take a variety of lessons to entirely new levels.
    3. Using the apps in creative ways, using the content with higher order questioning to probe for deeper understanding, and creating what-if situations from simulated environments.
    4.Use of interactive subject specific apps to leverage the benefits of visualization, concreteness in learning, and to eliminate persistent achievement gaps found in classrooms
    5. Can import a variety of content in other formats too.”
