    Brief description of the programme/project/Initiative :

    Water Quality Monitoring and Surveillance online programmer is pioneering effort to ensure quality of Public Drinking water sources. It also provides results on chemical and bacteriological testing for its potability. It indicates sources, if water is contaminated for necessary remedial measure.

    Why was the project started :

    Authentic database is not available regarding chemical and bacteriological contamination of public drinking water sources in the state. Water supply and Sanitation Department has taken initiative for implementation of Water Quality Monitoring and Surveillance system. This will enable the stakeholders monitor the programs arch ive Sujal – Nirmal Maharashtra.

    Objective :
    1. To test Public Drinking Water Sources least twice a year for bacteriological contamination and once a year for chemical contamination.
    2. To strengthen and establish Water Testing Laboratories at the Sub- Division, Block, and District level for testing selected chemical parameters and biological parameters.
    3. The services of five GP level persons who have been trained under National Rural Drinking Water Quality Monitoring & Surveillance programme since February 2006 i.e. ASHA worker, Anganwadi Workers, School Teachers, GP members, Social Workers etc. will continue to monitor be utilized for the surveillance programme.

    Target group: Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikarn (MJP), Groundwater Survey & development Agency (GSDA), Maharashtra Pollution Control board (MPCB), Water Supply & Sanitation Department (WSSD), Government of Maharashtra

    Geographical reach: 4, 50000 Public Drinking Water Sources across 351 rural taluks in 33 rural districts of Maharashtra
